The new three storey building is owned and operated by Pall Mall Medical and was built by Planet Construction (UK) Ltd. The ground floor contains consulting rooms, the first floor has imaging suites with MRI, CT, X-ray and Mamography facilities in addition to en-suite bedrooms, and the top floor houses the main operating theatres and an endoscopic theatre, along with recovery wards.
Medical facility specialist builder Planet Construction undertook the demolition of the existing buildings on the site at Newton Le Willows and construction of the new centre.
Bender UK was engaged to provide a turnkey solution for the supply, installation and commissioning of the operating theatres, including one of the world’s most advanced laminar clean air flow canopies which dramatically reduces the risk of infection. Bender UK supplied and installed Steris LED surgical lighting in both theatres, and hygienic touchscreen control panels, along with service pendants for the endoscopic theatre.
Bender was also responsible for installation and commissioning of the Isolated Power Supplies and Uninterruptible Power Supplies which ensure the safety and security of the electrical network for the facility.
The main operating theatre presented a significant challenge to achieve the highest standards of clean air flow due to restricted space. However, the choice of the advanced performance canopy from ADMECO enabled the installation to optimise clean air flow to achieve the highest NHS standard and compliance with UK HTM03-01A.
ADMECO canopies are characterised by high performance and low noise levels from the integral fans, and the model chosen for the Pall Mall Medical facility incorporates a media bridge, which replaces conventional services pendants. Differential distributors (laminisers) allow a targeted accelerated airflow in a defined zone of the outlet field compensating for elements such as the influence of surgical lights.
All ADMECO systems fully comply with the HTM03-01A directive along with DIN 1946-4, December 2008 (degree of turbulence or protection), SWKI Guideline 99-3, 400/5/2003, and ISO 14644, Class 5.
Bender UK worked closely with Planet Construction and with the facility’s owners in the choice of equipment, arranging for Pall Mall Medical partners to visit medical facilities in France to see Steris systems installed and operating.
Dr Sanjay Pitalia for the Pall Mall Medical said he was extremely pleased with the final finish on the operating room facilities and the clinical performance of the equipment which would be available for use by highly skilled consultant surgeons.
Stephen Mather from Planet Construction added: "The standard of work by Bender UK was excellent and they made a vital contribution to delivering the project on schedule. The canopy for the main operating theatre was a particular case in point, where Bender UK went the extra mile to select and install the most effective solution."
